Description

£18.99 – LP

A tight ensemble with a gospel-tinged, retro-soul garage sound, Birmingham, Alabama’s St. Paul & The Broken Bones are led by vocalist Paul Janeway, an impassioned soul singer with James Brown-like stage moves and command. The eight man band (Janeway is joined by bassist Jesse Phillips, guitarist Browan Lollar, trombone player Chad Fisher, drummer Andrew Lee, keyboard player Al Gamble, trumpeter Allen Bransetter and saxophonist Jeronne Ansari) worked with producer Jack Splash on their third record, a more personal, introspective project than St. Paul’s two previous albums, Half The City (2014) and Sea Of Noise (2016).

Young Sick Camellia looks deeply inward featuring Janeway’s most personal lyrics to date. The singer dives into his own family dynamic, addressing generational differences while also searching to find common ground. How can we love those so dear to us while their thoughts, opinions and experiences are diametrically opposed to our own? How do we understand and relate to each other? Janeway began to focus on how each generation views the one that preceded them. The process was and continues to be cathartic with more exploration ahead.
